Matching chemistry to metallurgy

BR Chemicals formulates foundry resins and refractory coatings around how each alloy actually behaves in the mould โ€” not a one-size-fits-all approach. Binder chemistry affects weld integrity in steel castings, coating filler affects surface finish in iron castings, and both affect how cleanly a mould collapses after pouring. Five casting applications, five formulation approaches

Steel Castings

Steel castings demand refractory coatings and resin systems that can withstand higher pouring temperatures without excessive metal penetration or veining. For steel foundries, we typically recommend alkaline phenolic ester-cured resin โ€” for its low nitrogen and sulphur content โ€” paired with alumino-silicate or magnesite based coatings for the refractoriness steel castings need at elevated pour temperatures.

Stainless Steel Castings

Stainless steel castings are particularly sensitive to binder chemistry โ€” sulphur and nitrogen content in the mould can affect weld integrity and surface finish on close-tolerance components. Our alkaline phenolic resin, along with magnesite and alumino-silicate coatings, is formulated with this sensitivity in mind, helping reduce surface defects on high-value stainless components.

Manganese Steel Castings

High-manganese steel castings, common in mining and earthmoving components, need coatings and binders that hold up under high pouring temperatures and resist burn-on. We support manganese steel foundries with alkaline phenolic resin systems and alumino-silicate or magnesite coatings selected for high thermal resistance and reduced metal-mould reaction.

Cast Iron & SG Iron Castings

Cast iron and SG (ductile) iron castings are the most common application for our furan and phenolic acid-cured resins in no-bake moulding, along with zircon, zircon-graphite and graphite based coatings for surface finish and easy shake-out. This is where the bulk of Indian foundry production sits, and where batch-to-batch consistency matters most for high-volume moulding lines.

Non-Ferrous Castings

Non-ferrous castings โ€” aluminium, brass, bronze and similar alloys โ€” generally pour at lower temperatures than ferrous castings but still need a mould system with good collapsibility and a clean surface finish. Phenolic urethane resin in cold-box or no-bake form is commonly used here, paired with a coating suited to the specific alloy and mould design.
